The idea of escorts – classy, outdated or outlaw?

Having a person escort you to your formal may sound a little outdated in this day and age, but for some people it’s a custom as inextricably associated with the formal as the dress, dancing and corsages.
But in recent years there’s been a broadening of the idea of what an escort is, something that appears to be driven by an attempt to stand out from the crowd on the night.
From limousines to convertibles, fire engines to stretch hummers, these days more and more students are choosing to arrive at their school formal with vehicular escorts. But as cool as this can be some can take it too far…
Late last month police spoke out against an elite private school in NSW for allowing members of an outlaw motorcycle gang to escort students to a school formal at the six-star Palazzo Versace Hotel.
One of the students attending the formal was the son of a high-ranking member of the Bandido Motorcycle Club, and had arranged for several members of the club to escort students of the Lindisfarne Anglican Grammar School to their formal. After arriving at the hotel, the bikies posed for pictures and did burnouts on the hotel's driveway before the students headed inside.
Whilst school principal Chris Duncan defended his school and the students' arrival at the event, saying the actions of the bikie escorts were "not inappropriate", the question becomes is this kind of thing sending the wrong message to students, and are we missing the point entirely?
The escort has always been a role focused on chivalry, where the guy made the night 100% about the girl by opening doors, being polite and escorting her wherever she goes on the night. The guy dressed formally (hence the name) and did his utmost to make the evening as civilized and enjoyable as possible for his partner.
In the past, it was a mark of a man to be able to put his partners enjoyment first, to show his respect for her by ensuring she knew her enjoyment was his chief priority. So whilst the idea of an escort may have shifted over the years, it may serve you to remember the origin of the idea if you want to ensure your partners’ night is a night to remember for all the right reasons.
