Here's a post from our latest Guest Blogger Jess. Jess weighs in the pros and cons of Hiring a Dress compared to Buying a Dress for your school formal.
If you’ve been shopping for a Formal Dress, chances are you’ve been in this position; the elation as you spot “The Dress”, followed by the heartache when you spot the hefty price tag. After the internal debate on why you should and shouldn’t fork out the money for the dress you just can’t justify spending that much on the the dress itself.
The dress doesn’t have to be the one that got away though, with the option of hiring dresses providing a great alternative to forking out hard earned cash. So you can get “The Dress” cheaper, sounds like a great idea, right?
While there are benefits of hiring a dress, there are some things you should take into consideration. First of all, hiring a dress still usually costs in excess of $100, and in the end you have to ship it straight back. If you had bought the dress you could stash it in your cupboard- yours to keep forever. But, unless you’re a modern day princess, the dress would probably be confined to the closet, meaning the cost to wear ratio would be cheaper with a hired dress.
Most dress hire shops are online only. Shopping for a formal dress from your bedroom may be convenient, but it also presents the obstacle of not being to try it on. An easy remedy for this would be to jump onto the website of the designer, locate a stockist and try the dress in store. Unfortunately, not every dress available on the dress hire sites will be available in the shops because of the limited ranges and different seasons. In the end it all comes down to just one dress, so it is definitely worth a browse.
Ultimately, hiring a dress can be more economically viable than buying one. However, while this is a big pro there are a small stack of cons that need to be weighed up to see if this is the right choice for you. We recommend inquiring about dress hire in store if you find a dress you fancy.
