Messy Bun for Formal

Formal Hair How-To

07 December 2010 by Marzie in Beauty, Homepage, Latest

If you’re doing your own hair for the formal (or your BFF’s!) then it can seem a bit overwhelming trying to recreate the red carpet looks with your own locks. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide for creating one of my fave hair looks this season: the new messy bun.

One of the easiest hairstyles to master is this messy up do that has been seen on all the runways and red carpets this season. It takes minutes to create and there are so many variables of this look that you can change it up easily to wear the look to more than one event!

For this look simply wash hair the day before you style it (your hair needs a bit more “grit” to stay looking fab all night). Spray some volume boosting spray into your roots and pull hair back into a loose ponytail just above the nape of the neck at the back of the head.

If you have shorter layers at the front pull these parts out and style around the face how you like. If your hair is all one length, keep it all in the ponytail but mess up the hair so it isn’t slick. The easiest way to do this is to use the palm of your hand to rub the hair on the crown of your head all over and create some angel like flyaways that all the it-girls and models have been rocking recently.

If you’re rockin’ a shorter mop, pull large pieces out of the ponytail and pin them back to the head in a twisting motion, making sure you cover the hair tie up with hair and spray with a light mist of hairspray to keep in place. If you have longer locks, twist the ¾ of the ponytail into a bun and secure with a hair tie and use that last ¼ piece of the ponytail to wrap around the hair tie so the bun looks neat and profesh. Spray with a light mist of hairspray and you’re done!

Lastly rough up hair and create some texture through the bun to master the messy look. If you’re loving this style and want to take it to the next level, tease the ponytail before you create the bun and hold it with hairspray.

You can also move the bun higher to the middle of your head and tease the crown of your head into a beehive style for a totally on-trend 50’s look. So many different variations to try!
