long vs short formal dress

Formal dress length

29 August 2011 by admin in Fashion, Homepage, Latest

Picking the length of your formal dress can be a tricky task. Whilst some girls have a pretty clear idea of what their dream formal dress should look like - the colour, the shape and style - there are also plenty of girls who are stuck when it comes to deciding whether to choose a long dress or a short one.

Which is better? Well, there are pros and cons for both;

There are many Pro’s for choosing to wear a longer dress. For starters, longer dresses provide a classic and elegant look that is ‘formal’, so you are likely to wear the dress again to other important events, such as weddings and engagements. And, if you’re not much of a heel person, you can easily get away with wearing flat shoes under a long dress, which helps eliminate the chance of stumbles and falls. Plus, hair, makeup and accessories can be simple when wearing a longer gown, as the length of the dress becomes the main feature.

And there are just as many Pro’s for choosing a short dress. Whilst they have previously been viewed as unacceptable for formal events, shorter cocktail-style dresses are now being designed so that they are perfect for more formal events. When you wear a short dress, you needn’t worry about wearing too many accessories as you can glam short dresses up as much as your heart desires. And short dresses also mean less tripping hazards, as the hem won’t get caught under your feet, and you can continue to wear the dress to the after party without seeming too over-dressed for the more casual event.

Then there are the Cons of wearing a dress with more length, the main one being the increased possibility of tripping. Wearing a long dress can make you more hesitant to hit the dance floor for fear that the dress may get caught under a heeled shoe. Also, with a longer gown everything else must be kept simple so as to not overdo it - too many accessories can overload a longer dress, as can too much makeup.

The main Con for choosing to wear a short dress is that they may appear too ‘party like’ and not ‘formal’ enough. The fear is that you might arrive on the night and feel like your formal dress is more suitable for a nightclub. You may also find that wearing a short dress will cost more, because you will be giving your accessories, hair, and makeup and shoes a higher importance.

There are pro’s and con’s for both styles of dresses, the final decision should really come down to which style of dress you would be more comfortable wearing for your formal. As a decision making criteria comfort is the key, because the more comfortable you are with your outfit, the prouder you will be to wear it.
