New York. Paris. Milan. Brisbane? When it comes to being fashion conscious, how do Brisbane girls measure up?
Brisbane girls pride themselves on being on top of the trends, and when it comes to school formal wear, it seems that they are. They know what colours and styles are in during any given season, and where fashion is heading. The down side of this though, is that with so many following the trends it is becoming increasingly difficult to get Brisbanites to think outside the square, with only a few girls opting for formal gowns that are truly different.
According to Margaret from After 5 Bridal and Formal, this appears to be because girls in Brisbane tend to work out too many details of their desired dress before they start looking, and leave little room for movement. They have difficulty diverting from their idea of the perfect dress. Colours or styles which may well suit them are discarded, because it doesn’t fit the dream, or because they know of another girl wearing a similar gown. Of course it makes sense to plan your outfit and have an idea of what you want. But this could also limit your options, and prevent you from finding the dress that will really show off your own personal style. “It is rare, and wonderful, to find a girl who knows exactly what style she wants, and for that style to then suit her beautifully,” Margaret says.
Perhaps a way out of this trap is to be open minded. Try colours, styles, and designs that you had never thought of wearing before. Look at shorter styles or bold patterns, which are becoming increasingly popular with the USA prom girls but haven’t quite taken off in Brisbane yet. Or shy away from the popular purples, reds and blues and try a pastel shade instead—these muted tones will actually make you stand out, as they tend to be less common. Margaret says, “It is equally rewarding to put an unthought-of style or colour on a girl and watch her face light up. Then a smile is worth a thousand words.”

The message is, keep an eye on fashion trends but don’t be afraid to get out there, channel your own style and try something new and different. Bring something unique to formal wear, and put Brisbane on the map as one of the fashion capitals of the world.
